Ashley Santana ’11

Ashley is president of Central Activities Network (CAN), which organizes free programs for CCSU students. She and a small corps of student volunteers keep the campus lively, bringing in outside talent, showing movies, and giving students a forum at Open Mike Nights. “They can do anything from telling jokes to playing the guitar to reading poems,” she says. CAN also sponsors four weeks of daily activities, from Welcome Week to Spring Week.

An elementary education major, Ashley is preparing for student teaching and works as supervisor for the New Britain Parks and Recreation after-school program. “We help with homework, do arts and crafts, and go on field trips,” she says. Asked if she is becoming an expert in time management, she laughs and concedes, “I’m getting there.”

Ashley’s successes were rewarded with a scholarship, and she eagerly makes the case for her fellow students. “Central is full of inspiring student leaders,” she says, “and many deserve and appreciate scholarship support. Without it, they wouldn’t be here.”
